Disrupters or Disrupted?

Firstly, God told me, “Too many Christians are distracted by dire predictions about the future.” Secondly, He told me, “I have commissioned and anointed many disrupters who will change the directions of cities and nations.” Thirdly, He told me, “I AM in charge of times and seasons!” This last statement was said with an assertive tone tinged with fatherly love. He clarified further: “I don’t want you to be moved by ‘the signs of the times.’ I want you to be moved by the One who is in charge of times and seasons” (see Daniel 2:21). It always amazes me how God can pack so much meaning into a few short sentences!

The Prophet Elijah – An Anointed Disrupter

During Elijah’s time, the demonic takeover of Israel looked unstoppable and irreversible. Queen Jezebel ruled with an iron fist. The prophets of the Lord were systematically executed. It was a dark time. Elijah appeared out of nowhere with one major qualifier: he had been standing in God’s divine council (1 Kings 17:1). In his generation, he became well known as the disrupter of the inevitable. Here’s what God spoke to me: “Elijah was a disrupter who stood in My divine council. He was commissioned as a disrupter, but even more importantly, he was commissioned to anoint disrupters.”

Elijah had two commissions. The first commission was to disrupt the demonic takeover of Israel. This commission reached a dramatic climax when he confronted the 450 prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel (1 Kings 18:20-40). The second commission was to anoint a new generation of disrupters. He received this commission on Mount Horeb (1 Kings 19:15-17). Elijah’s first commission started a process. His second commission made it multi-generational. Calling down fire from heaven at Mount Carmel was dramatic, but anointing a new generation of disrupters was even more powerful.

Here’s what Elijah teaches us about disrupters:

• They stand in God’s divine council.
• They appear when disruption doesn’t seem possible.
• They disrupt Satan’s timelines over nations.
• They realign nations with God’s timelines.

The Book of Revelation – An Invitation

The book of Revelation takes the Elijah mandate to a whole new level. In the opening scene, John saw a person and heard a voice. The person was the glorified Jesus—the divine man with eyes of flaming fire (Revelation 1:13-17). The voice came from the same glorified Jesus: “After these things I looked, and there was a door standing open in heaven! And the first voice I had heard speaking to me like a trumpet said: ‘Come up here so that I can show you what must happen after these things.’” (Revelation 4:1). What John saw caused him to fall on his face like a dead person. What John heard caused him to go through a door standing open in heaven. The emphasis was on seeing and hearing the glorified Jesus. The important question for us is: “What are we seeing and hearing?”

Through the door, John saw the most profound seat of government in existence: “Immediately I was in the Spirit, and a throne was standing in heaven with someone seated on it!” (Revelation 4:2). What unfolded was a divine council scene with living creatures, stately elders, innumerable angels and praying saints. Here’s what God spoke to me about this scene: “If you interpret the book of Revelation without participating in My divine council, you will both misunderstand and misapply its contents.”

John was both a participator and a prophetic model. When John heard a voice that sounded like a trumpet, it was an invitation for us to hear the same voice. When John went through the open door, it was an invitation for us to go through the same door. Once again, God spoke to me: “The book of Revelation is not a roadmap for the end times; it is an invitation to participate in My divine council. Those who stand in My divine council will know My counsel.”

Are You A Disrupter?

Let me make it relevant for today. In 1995, the evangelist Lester Sumrall visited my city for a single meeting. At the time Lester was 81 years old. Surprisingly, there were only about 50 people in the meeting. In 1995, I was young and hugely inspired by the great Pentecostal revivalists of the twentieth century. One of those revivalists was Smith Wigglesworth. In 1939, when Smith Wigglesworth was about 80 years old, he released an impartation of faith to the young Lester Sumrall. Lester credited this impartation with shaping his subsequent global ministry. Many times I had asked God for an impartation from God’s anointed revivalists.

That night in Dunedin, Lester preached about Jesus’ disciples being used to shake cities and nations. It was a simple message. He said a phrase I have never forgotten: “There could be city-shakers in this room tonight.” Lester wasn’t fazed by the small turnout in the meeting; he was looking for a new generation of city-shakers. After he spoke, there was an altar call. All Lester did was move along the line of people at the altar and declare, “Be blessed!” over each one.

I ended up on the floor with the fire of God riveting up and down my body—and it didn’t lift. After some time, I remember someone trying to calm me down because I was breathing so intensely. I then remember the lights being turned out in the venue. Eventually, I managed to stagger out to the car. Here’s the lesson: disrupters who look beyond their times are used to anoint new generations of disrupters. Less than two years later, Lester finished his earthly race. God heard my cry and set up a divine appointment. God’s ways are amazing.

Disrupters don’t live in fear of the future; they create the future. Two thousand years ago, God used twelve men to shake the world. It was the greatest disruption the world had ever known, but it was just the start. God is using men and women in this generation to do the same. Are you one of them?
