Charlie Kirk: The Legacy

by Nathan Shaw

Charlie Kirk leaves a rich legacy to a new generation. God highlighted three aspects of this legacy to me. They are summarized in the words personality, mantle and gifts.

Personality

Personality is a unique God-breathed aspect of every human being (Genesis 2:7). Charlie’s personality can’t be replaced—there is only one Charlie Kirk. As a prophetic model to a generation, however, his influence is, and will be, huge. Charlie had a personality that was larger than life because he was secure in his God-given identity and he knew his God-given mandate. When we love a person deeply we don’t lose our unique personality, but rather, something of the other person’s personality rubs off on us. Charlie was bold, courageous and loving and his life gives us permission to be the same.

Mantle

A mantle is a spiritual endowment given to an individual by God to accomplish a specific task, destiny or call. A mantle is a long-term, usually life-time, endowment. It becomes part of its recipient much like a piece of clothing they wear. Charlie Kirk’s mantle was clearly evident in his leadership ability, his adeptness to confront the powerful ideologies of the times and his impact on a generation of young people. When a person mantled for a specific task is taken from the earth, fresh new mantles are released to fully accomplish that task. God has no shortage of mantles. His purposes will be fully accomplished on the earth.

It is often assumed that Elisha received Elijah’s mantle after Elijah was taken up to heaven in a whirlwind (2 Kings 2). When Elijah’s cloak fell to the ground Elisha picked it up as his own. It should be realized though that mantles are spiritual endowments and that each mantle is unique. Mantles from God are as unique as the people who carry them. When Elisha took up Elijah’s mantle it was a reshaped, custom-designed mantle for Elisha. The same dynamic often happens with fathers and sons. A father and son may be similar, but they are different. Even if two mantles are similar, each mantle carries its own unique authority.

Through Jesus’ death, burial and resurrection He obtained all authority in heaven and on earth. He then commanded his disciples to “go and make disciples of all nations” (Matthew 28:18-19). There is a direct connection between Jesus obtaining “all authority in heaven and on earth” and commanding His disciples to “go and make disciples of all nations.” The connection informs us that Jesus generously distributes the authority He has obtained.

Gifts of the Spirit

The gifts of the Spirit are in-the-moment spiritual endowments that come on a person to help them with their bigger task, destiny or call. Paul lists nine gifts of the Spirit—the word of wisdom, the word of knowledge, faith, gifts of healings, working of miracles, prophecy, discerning of spirits, speaking in different kinds of tongues and interpretation of tongues (1 Corinthians 12:8-10). Charlie put himself in situations where the gifts of the Spirit were necessary and important.

One of the gifts he frequently demonstrated was the word of wisdom. In speaking with students on university campuses he would know not only how to answer their queries and arguments but also how to handle their responses and reactions. Much of this he learned from experience, study and hard work, but some of it was the spontaneous gift of the word of wisdom that came from the Spirit of God.

The Impact of One Person

As a teenager I was dynamically impacted by a lady called Jill Austin. Jill was creative, prophetic, passionate, fiery, radical and cutting-edge. Her personality, mantle and ability to move in the Spirit ignited something unstoppable in my life. At a young age much of my ministry simply mirrored hers. I would do what she did and the same dynamic things that happened in her meetings would happen in my meetings. That is the power of personality, mantles and gifts to ignite and call forth similar things in other people.

It’s Gonna Be Huge

Personality, mantles and gifts all come from God. Charlie seemed larger than life because he was strong in all three. His courage came from three sources:

  1. He was confident about his God-given identity.
  2. He was mantled with a unique portion of Christ’s authority to accomplish a specific task.
  3. He knew that the Spirit of God would give him the words to say and the actions to take at exactly the moment he needed to know them.

Charlie Kirk leaves a powerful legacy. The movement and courage generated by his personality, mantle and gifts has only just begun. His life trumpets a simple message to all who will listen: Live large, leave a legacy.
